Miami based painter Nicole Burko re-contextualizes fragmented memories through vast underwater landscapes which represent cognitive zones of occurrence and introspection. These spaces are at once sublime and unsettling; poignant vessels that transcend time and place. Here the dichotomy between wanderlust and disquietude mirror that of loneliness and solitude. These fixations of nostalgia manifest as reinterpretations of new spaces that she finds in underwater experiences. The images are then obscured, inverted and distorted through digital collage and painting. The resulting subverted content leaving a sense of both familiarity and emptiness; of eeriness and aquatic space.
